‘Asturias’ is part of a personal project by Diek Grobler, in which he makes animated films to classical music as performed by pianist Wessel van Wyk.

The title of the film is that of the composition by Isaak Albeniz, and refers to a region of Spain. The imagery used in the film was taken from existing scraperboard drawings by Grobler.

The film is non narrative – an exploration of moving visual images as they are suggested and inspired by the music.

In ‘Asturias’ the alternating turbulence and calm in the music is interpreted as scenes from a landscape, at times in the grip of a windstorm, at times lying under a brooding sky.
